In the following article, those runners who are participating this year for the first time in the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON are to find out about the exclusive BERLIN -MARATHON Jubilee Club, which honours and exults the most faithful participants. You will find out the most important information about getting into the Jubilee-Club - for you beginners, the year to look forward to is 2014!
On October 13, 1974, the "1st Berlin People’s Marathon" with 286 participants (244 finishers) was started at Waldschulallee 80 in Charlottenburg.
The race was relocated to the city centre on September 27, 1981, with the start in front of the Berlin Reichstag and the finish on the boulevard Kurfürstendamm, between Joachimstaler Strasse and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The relocation to the city centre with all of the spectators and the great atmosphere led to the continual growth of the event with its now great—and international—participation.
Tradition was started
Since the early nineteen nineties, the tradition was started of recording the names of the runners who succeeded in finishing the BERLIN-MARATHON ten times and to honour their proven long-term dedication to the BERLIN-MARATHON with a certificate.
As there are of course no computer files with the names of the participants for the early marathon races, it is not possible to automatically become a member of the exclusive BELRIN MARATHON Jubilee Club.
In order to become a member, you must submit copies of your participant certificates (or if these are not available, participation can be proven by presenting the times and rankings listed in the results lists). Please submit these documents to the MARATHON Running Office, Glockenturmstr. 23, 14055 Berlin. An automated registration of repeat participation is in planning.
Up until now, the BERLIN MARATHON Jubilee Club has only been open to runners and wheelchair competitors. A respective club membership is in planning for the inline skaters (this year marks the 9th anniversary of the skating MARATHON).
1,472 runners and wheelchair competitors
So far we have been able to cordially welcome 1,472 runners and wheelchair competitors from 14 countries into our Jubilee Club. Leading the pack is Bernd Hübner with race number 201 with 31 competitions, and Christl Heine (Berlin) leads the women with 23 times participating. We have put together a list of the Jubilee Club members with the most numbers of times participating.
Starting in 1998, the BERLIN-MARATHON has been presenting the jubilee marathon participants with special green personal race numbers (starting with no. “201” for the men and “F101” for the women). Our Jubilee members can keep this race number for the rest of the events organized by SCC-RUNNING (for instance the BERLIN HALF MARATHON, City Night). These race numbers are green and thus stand out from the rest of the participants. The spectators can recognise them quickly and give them the added cheers they deserve.
After we have received the filled registration forms, all newly admitted Jubilee members receive a special certificate personally signed by the race director, as well as the green Jubilee t-shirt. All members also automatically receive the Running News, filled with the most current running information, several times a year.
The specific race numbers are determined according to the order in which the applications were received. Please understand that we cannot accommodate personal race number wishes.
Despite having Jubilee membership, all members must still register through the normal registration process and pay the appropriate fee.
Special race number
All participants in the Jubilee Club will receive a special race number (for the back) at the Jubilee information booth at the BERLIN VITAL fair for the 32nd real,- BERLIN MARATHON 2005, which has the club logo, the first and last name of the member, and the number of times participating in the BERLIN MARATHON.
At the specially decorated Jubilee Club information booth at the BERLIN VITAL Fair, Bernd Hübner, his wife Monica, and further volunteers will welcome you will a cup of coffee and other refreshments, allowing you to get to know one another and share experiences and advice. The special Jubilee Club souvenirs will also be presented there.
This year there will be about 90 candidates participating, of whom 9 are women, who will hopefully pass through the finish at the Brandenburg Gate of their tenth BERLIN- MARATHON successfully at the 32nd real,- BERLIN-MARATHON 2005. They will be honoured afterwards on stage with a certificate and club t-shirt. There will also be special certificates for the successful completion of 15, 20, 25, and 30 BERLIN MARATHONs.
Special Jubilee souvenirs
Our SCC-RUNNING souvenir team offers special Jubilee souvenirs available exclusively to members at the BERLIN VITAL Fair and at the souvenir stand at other SCC-RUNNING events. The products can also be ordered through the online shop.
We will be developing further activities for the "BMJC" (BERLIN-MARATHON Jubilee -Club) in order to continue publicly emphasising the special relationship and connection between the participants of the BERLIN-MARATHON. The newest information about the Jubilee Club can be found in our news databank.
