Over 1,000 runners from Hamburg, and almost 500 each from Munich and London will be participating at this year’s real,- BERLIN-MARATHON.
The real,- BERLIN MARATHON is more popular in other cities than ever before. A good 75 percent of the 40,000 runners who will be competing on September 25 do not come from Berlin. The real,- BERLIN MARATHON seems to be especially attractive to athletes from Hamburg, with 1,073 runners coming to Berlin from the Hanseatic city. That is almost 300 more than last year.
London with 490 runners
The second top city sending runners to Berlin is a foreign metropolis: London. With 490 runners, London sets a record for the most foreigners from one city. Last year there were 294 competitors in Berlin from the English capital. The next spots on the international city ranking are filled by: Munich (473), Hanover
(316), Vienna (303), Cologne (300) and Stuttgart (278).
Denmark with 2,360 runners
Traditionally, the greatest number of foreigners comes from Denmark. This year 2,360 runners will represent the Danes in Berlin. That makes the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON theoretically the second largest ‘Danish marathon.’ There is a considerable increase in the number of runners coming from Great Britain. With 1,325 runners, there are almost 50% more Brits competing than last year. In earlier years, Great Britain often held the top rank for foreign participation, which had to do with allied forces who were stationed in West Berlin. The third rank for foreign participation is held by the Dutch, with 1,064 runners.
The following cities provide the greatest number of runners at the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON:
Berlin 9,833
Hamburg 1,073
London 490
Munich 473
Hanover 316
Vienna 303
Cologne 300
Stuttgart 278
