The Kenyan athletes didn’t win any gold medal in Helsinki yet. But even before the championship started they had lost some equipment. Kenya ’s team equipment was partly sold illegally before the World Championships. This was said by some managers. Because of this some of the Kenyan athletes came without suitable vests to Helsinki . They were then equipped only meagrely, with the consequence that not all athletes were wearing fitting clothes.
For a pair of spikes 5,000 Kenyan shillings were reported to have been paid. That is about 65 US-Dollar. A track-suit was available for 3,000 Kenyan shillings (about 40 Dollar). The average annual income is about 360 US-Dollar in Kenya .
„The police is investigating this case and aims to find the ones responsible for that“, said the president of Athletics Kenya, Isaiah Kiplagat. Kiplagat explained that the Kenyan Federation get the equipment from the National Olympic Committee. On its way between the two federations the equipment probably got lost. „But nonetheless we gave our athletes the equipment they need.“
