11,650 runners in Germany’s biggest relay event staged in Berlin
2005-06-17
A record number of 11,650 runners in 2,330 teams participated in the 6th edition of the HypoVereinsbank TEAM-Relay staged in Berlin. The two-day-event was held in the Tiergarten, a public park area, near to the Brandenburg Gate in the city centre on Wednesday and Thursday. The relay was staged by SCC-RUNNING, the organiser of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON and many more road races in Berlin.
There was an upset in the men’s event for defending champion Long Distance Berlin since their team was surprisingly beaten. Long Distance had won the event during the last three years. But they obviously made a mistake by letting their strongest athlete run the first 5 k instead of the last. They were leading until the last round, but then overtaken by TG Scholty Berlin. Marco Lützenberger, Ingo Ortel, Jens Freudenau, Volker Lorenz and Sven Kersten clocked 1:21:34. With the exception of one runner all athletes come from the club behind the organisation of SCC-RUNNING: SC Charlottenburg Berlin is one of the most traditional athletics clubs in Germany. While Long Distance was second with 1:21:55 the Lang- and Laufladen took third place in 1:24:02.
Defending champions LTC Berlin won again this year. Regina Marunde, Ulrike Fink, Ullika Schulz, Antje Ungewickell and Kim Raisner clocked 1:40:52. The Lang- and Laufladen was second with 1:42:02 while Long Distance took third in 1:44:51. Former world class track runner Kathrin Weßel (maiden name: Ullrich) ran the first part of the race for long distance.
There were a number of prominent people running in this event. Among them was the former Berlin mayor Eberhard Diepgen whose team finished in 2:18:30. Team SCC-RUNNING SPECIAL featured the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON’s Race Director Mark Milde and his father: long time Race Director Horst Milde. Medical Director Willi Heepe, John Kunkeler (Course measurer) and Jörg Wenig (Editor) completed the team, which clocked 2:03:00 for the 25 k.
