The fastest growing running event in the series organised by SCC RUNNING has once again topped its numbers, now reaching five-digits for the first time ever. Well over 10,000 runners in 2,000 teams will compete in the 6th HypoVereinsbank TEAM Relay, which will take place on June 15 and 16 in the Tiergarten Park. That is an increase of over 10 percent over last year. Every team will run the 5 x 5 km distance in the Tiergarten. The start and finish will be near the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. The races will start next week on Wednesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. At 6 p.m., there will be a Bambini Run for children under 10 about 800 m.
The fourth largest race in Berlin
With over 10,000 participants, this relay event is the fourth largest race in Berlin, following the real,- BERLIN MARATHON, the Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON and the AVON Women’s Race—and it is singular in all of Germany.
Due to the rapid rate of growth — at the premiere in the year 2000 there were 218 teams with 1,090 runners - and three years ago there were still only half as many runners (4,230) as this year — since 2004, the race has taken place over the course of two days. With their race materials, each team receives a picnic basket from the organiser SCC-RUNNING with, among other things, a bottle of red wine, a baguette, cheese, sausage, fruit, and gummy bears.
Directly from work
The company teams come directly from their offices and work in the middle of the week to the Tiergarten, where they join together on the park lawn, or they can rent catered tents along the course. Due to organisational reasons, late registration is not possible for the HypoVereinsbank TEAM Relay.
The Berlin House of Representatives will be running
For the first time, there will be a team from the Berlin House of Representatives. The exact list of the quintet is not yet set, but it is their goal to have all of the 5 parties represented in their team. Those running for sure are Peter Kurth, speaker on work for the CDU, and Dr. Gabriele Hiller, the European speaker for the PDS. The representatives will be running on Wednesday. As usual, there will be several embassy teams participating, such as one from the Royal Danish Embassy and the USA. There will also be several teams from the federal ministries.
Charité Hospital sets a record
The Berliner Charité will be participating in the HypoVereinsbank TEAM Relay with about 80 teams. That is an absolute record for the number of teams entered from a single company. The Deutsche Bank, the German Red Cross Clinics, and the AOK will also be sending about 20 teams each to the race.
The two main sponsors of the race, the HypoVereinsbank and the Berliner Wasserbetriebe (Berlin Water Works), will also be participating with 15 to 20 teams. Both the chairman of the Berliner Wasserbetriebe, Jörg Simon, and the head of the financial committee, Frank Bruckmann, will also be running.
Like for many companies, the Berliner Wasserbetriebe sponsors its teams for the HypoVereinsbank TEAM Relay. The teams also have been offered a chance to meet for a company run through the Tiergarten after work in the weeks before the race. “More and more colleagues are starting to run. That is good for the work climate; running clears your head for new ideas,” says Stephan Natz, the speaker for the Berliner Wasserbetriebe.
Old star-running-team from real,- BERLIN-MARATHON
