Sabrina Mockenhaupt wins AVON RUNNING Berlin Women’s Race

Sabrina Mockenhaupt, Germany’s current number one long distance
runner, won the 22nd edition of the AVON RUNNING Berlin Women’s race.
There was a record record number of 11,884 women and girls
participating in the event, cheered on by several thousand spectators
along the streets in Tiergarten near the Brandenburg Gate on Saturday
evening. Runners could choose betweem two distances: 5 or 10 k. Since
its first edition in 1984, the race has become the largest of its kind
in Germany.
Sabrina Mockenhaupt, who recently won the European 10,000 m
challenge in a personal best of 31:21.28 minutes, showed another
convincing performance and dominated the 10 k race right from the
start. She crossed the line in a time of 32:57 minutes. The 24 year-old
was ahead of Melanie Kraus (34:22) and Claudia Dreher (35:18). Her
winning time is the fastest since Tansania’s Restituta Joseph broke the
course record with 32:14 four years ago.
“It was a great experience to have run in this women’s race in
Berlin. And at the end I gave everything to achieve a sub 33 minute
time”, Sabrina Mockenhaupt said. Before the start she had posed for a
photo with the 75,000th runner in the event’s history.Mockenhaupt’s
next race will be the German 10,000 m Championships next weekend. But
she has already qualified for the World Championships. Sabrina
Mockenhaupt announced that she intends to run her marathon debut next
year. “And I would like to run it in Berlin. Before that I plan to run
the Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON next spring”, she said.
“This event is getting bigger and more exciting from year to
year. We are very happy with the development and the organisation”,
Werner Köller, the marketing manager of AVON Germany, said.
