IAAF.org: Tergat returns to face stiff challenge in Brussels
Three years since Tergat last ran on the country
2003-12-20
hree of the first four from last week’s SPAR European Cross Country Championships head for Brussels this weekend for the Iris Lotto CrossCup of Belgium - IAAF Permit - , but standing in their way on Sudnay (21 Dec) is five-time World Cross Country Champion Paul Tergat. The holder of the fastest ever-times for the half-marathon and marathon was thought to have ended his cross country career, along with any track aspirations, when he moved to the marathon in 2001 but Sunday’s race could be the first of three clashes with Ukraine’s European champion Sergiy Lebid this winter.
Tergat and Lebid will also face each other in the Great North Cross Country in Newcastle on 1 January, and if all goes well the Kenyan is considering targeting a sixth individual World Cross Country title in Brussels (20 / 21 March 2004), on nearly the identical course he will race on Sunday.
It is three years since Tergat last ran on the country and he is looking forward to competing on the surface again before switching back to the roads for the Flora London Marathon and the Olympic Marathon in Athens which is top of his agenda for 2004.
