Paula Radcliffe wins the AIMS/ASICS WORLD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD

And receives the AIMS/CITIZEN World

The outstanding British athlete Paula Radcliffe received a boost as she continues her recovery from injury when she received three world accolades from the Association of International Marathon and Road Races (AIMS).

Paula received the top award in world road racing The AIMS/ASICS World athlete of the year award as well as having her fastest times in history on the road for a female athlete officially recognised with the AIMS/CITIZEN Worlds Fastest time awards for both the marathon and 10km.

Paula has set both world bests this year : 23 FEB 2003, San Juan, ‘Worlds Best 10 km road race, 30:21 13 APR 2003, ‘London, Flora London Marathon, 2:15:25

The AIMS/ASICS World athlete of the year awards were founded in 1992 and are decided each year by way of nominations made by the members of the world body The Association of International Marathons & Road Races (AIMS) member races. The membership totals some 170 races in over 70 countries covering every continent of the world.

Paula received the awards from AIMS Director Nick Bitel in The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

Previous winners of the AIMS/ASICS World Athlete of the year award include Uta Pippig (Germany) twice, Tegla Loroupe (Kenya) four times, Naoko Takahashi (Japan), Catherine Ndereba (Kenya) and the very first winner Liz McColgan (Scotland).

AIMS criteria for recognising the Worlds fastest times is very straight forward:

AIMS Board of Directors must be satisfied that the event is organised to the highest standards according to AIMS road race management policies; The course must not be less than the distance stipulated; The course must have been measured and certified by an AIMS/IAAF approved measurer; The race must be subject to the possibility of drug testing.
